Goal setting – Dismissing what the experts say I should do…. and keeping it simple
Raise your hand if you have been stumbling to get your goals created for 2018! Yeah, me too. I tried to start in December with Powersheets, and felt overwhelm set in quickly.
It’s hard to do all of that soul searching while Christmas music was playing, attending festive parties, and keeping my kids busy since they were off of school. So my plan to get through the pre-work and the goal setting pages in the Powersheets workbook by January 1st was a bust. I felt bad about it at first, but on January 4th I decided to put the workbook away and simplify.
I sat down with a blank piece of paper with the phase “What I want 2018 to be” at the top. And I let myself write down whatever popped into my head when I thought about that.
Then I prioritized the things I felt most drawn to
Lastly, I created two lists on a Google doc: “Personal” and “Business.” Under these titles I listed the top 3-4 goals
Overall I want to be more connected to my people and to my business. So here are my personal goals:
Feel more motivated to work on my business
Spend less time beating myself up for not knowing everything or for ideas that flop
More face-to-face time with others…..my husband, my girls, my friends, and my virtual acquaintances.
Overall, I want to be more intentional about the decisions I make and the direction I am going. So here are my business goals:
Create a content strategy and plan – that include blogging, social media, and email newletters
Focus on growing the revenue from my Biz Workbook Shop – this includes developing new products, updating current, revising my pricing strategy, and developing a marketing plan specifically for this shop.
Grow my email list, nurture them, and get consistent communicating with them – to be honest, this is a subgoal of the first two, but I want to really focus on it this year, so I pulled it out as a separate goal.
Create a roadmap of the things I have done to get to this point in this business – This will be the basis of a new offering, but I don’t want to make it too big yet.
In order to succeed, you have to have a plan to do the things to achieve these goals. I am also keeping this really simple:
Hire a Life coach to help me work through the steps, and more importantly, my emotions and feeling that were getting in the way of feeling motivated, confident, and connected.
Start each week prioritizing the tasks I need to do and assigning them to time blocks on my calendar.
I use a weekly Day Designer Planner that is set up with the days vertically. I list my top 3 tasks for each day at the top.
Then I block out time on my google calendar to work on these tasks.
I really try to stick with this setup, but if something needs to slide, I move it to a new time.
Assess each new opportunity to determine whether is aligns with my goals. If not, file it away for the future, or dismiss it if it is really way off. It’s so easy to get distracted. If yes, I prioritize it in my action plan for the week or month. By having a process to deal with things that don’t fit in my vision, it’s easier to make a more intentional decision.
