Define your WHY… and learn the 3 Main Reasons I Do What I Do
There are so many reasons why people become entrepreneurs:
To make their own schedule
To gain creative independence
To pursue financial freedom
Did you notice that all of these have one thing in common? At the core, they are all about freedom….. to do what you like and to make what you want, when you want, and for your own price, on your own terms.
Do you know why you do what you do?
Do you know what drives you everyday to get up and work without someone telling you you have to do so?
Do you know what you are passionate about in your business?
Knowing the answers to these questions is so important, because it sets the culture of your company, defines your values, and drives to to keep going, even when it gets hard.
I encourage you to take 30-60 minutes to define your own Why…. try to pick from 3-5, so they don’t get diluted.
And as an added bonus, here a my 3 main reasons for doing what I do:
I have done a lot of different jobs and careers in my life….
I was a cashier for a few different fast food restaurants.
I worked in multiple offices filing, organizing, and data entry.
I designed websites, both the look and feel and the technical parts of the back end to tie them into other systems, such as inventory and fulfillment.
I was a business consultant for several large Fortune 100 corporations looking to streamline their business, add control measures, and outsource overseas.
I was an interior design assistant creating computer drawings for commercial spaces and presentation boards.
I was an IT Project Manager controlling the implementation of new and upgraded financial software for a large insurance provider.
I owned a wedding floral and design business.
And I chose this latest venture, as an Operations Business Manager (OBM), strategist, and project planner because I wanted to be location and time independent.
That means I can do my work…
from any where,
at any time,
for as many (or as few hours) as I want!
I need this kind of flexibility because my husband travels 3 days a week, and we have 2 daughters that need me outside the typical 9 to 5 hours. So I mainly work the hours they are in school. That means I often take of days off (or severely limit my hours) when they are out of school for holidays, teacher planning, days, and Christmas, Spring, and Summer breaks.
I also run our household, including normal maintenance, running errands, cooking and cleaning, and managing special projects. We like to remodel our home…. it’s kind of a hobby. Like today, the painters are here, which means I started a little later and have to stop when they need to ask questions, want me to approve the job they are doing, etc.
So I set my hours accordingly. And I plan my work with my clients to fit this lifestyle…..AND I help my clients to achieve this flexibility too!
This is where the money part comes into play. I define what my knowledge, experience, and skills are worth, and charge accordingly. I decide what to spend money on, and what not to, to run this business. It’s also on me to be profitable. So I own these decisions, making them without fear, with informed analysis and intentional selections.:
Knowing that saying yes to something, means saying no to something else….and visa versa.
Choosing to make calculated risks to move forward and grow….without getting bogged down to deep and too long in the analysis.
Understanding any mistakes and moving forward to learn quickly to not do that again.
Deciding to give back my time and treasures to my community to make it a better place.
And again, I help my clients to make these decisions too, by giving them recommendations for changes that often include spending money on a new piece of software or more labor, cancelling services and software that are redundant or too robust for what they need, and strategies to help increase their ability to bring in more revenue.
I love helping others get their own businesses working more productively, so they too can enjoy the the freedoms of being an entrepreneur, especially getting time back to do more of the things they want to do. I enjoy the collaboration of working on things outside of myself, and seeing them make progress.
I also like setting goals, driving the vision, and changing things up when I want. I like designing the way that I work with my clients and what the deliverables look like. And I certainly like deciding who to work with, and, often more importantly, who not work with!
There is a lot of control in the work I do and how I like to execute it. But its purpose is to provide more freedom in time and direction for both me and my clients. And that is so empowering…and what I believe the entrepreneurial spirit to be all about.
